During the first wave of US Smurfmania, there was a pop hit, by a chanteuse named Cheri, called "Murphy's Law". The chorus featured Smurf-like voices, done via varispeed gimcrackery, as made famous by The Chipmunks (David Bowie did it, on occasion) - sampling now made it easy. Some synthesizers had "Smurf" settings among their factory-preset sounds; part of the trick was to set an envelope to quickly raise and lower the pitch.

I couldn't resist adding a Smurfnode :)
