A yearly science competition run by Science Service that offers scholarships to high school seniors who display talent and initiative in science and mathematics. It has run since 1942 and was sponsored by Westinghouse until 1998, when Intel took over. 200 semifinalists are chosen from the applicant pool based on the quality of the research presented in their application. Of those, 40 finalists are chosen to go to the final round, named the Science Talent Istitute, held in Washington, DC. Both semifinalists and finalists receive small scholarships and prizes, but the large scolarships are given to the top 10 ranked winners chosen from the final 40 through an intensive week-long process that involves interviews and presentations of the students' research.
