Synchronous Transport Signal (STS) is the electrical equivalent of the Optical Carrier (OC) in SONET -- i.e., STS-1 denotes the same speed as OC-1 (51.84 Mbps). The STS hierarchy increases similarly to the OC hierarchy (STS-1, STS-3, STS-12, STS-48, etc.).
