(1884-1951) A man who started life as an explorer and then turned to a filmmaker, Flaherty produced the first examples of the documentary film. His obsessive theme was the struggle for survival, and he spent several years studying remote cultures, whose people he idealized to his controversial yet striking film poems. Key works include Nanook of the North, Moana, Man of Aran and Louisiana Story.
