One of the chipsets used in Wi-Fi (802.11b) wireless ethernet cards.

There are two main flavours, ones based on Symbol designes, (spectrum24t amongst them), and ones based on Intersil designs.

The Intersil ones can be used in HostAPMode, which can let you turn a *nix box into a full blown wireless access point.
