Primary Stages is a small (99 seat) theatre in New York, New York founded in 1985. True to their name, they specialize in new plays by American authors. They are the home theatre of David Ives an inventive and humorous playwright (His most famous play is All in The Timing)

In addition to producing new work they also have readings and workshops for playwrights. They are known as a playwright’s theatre.

In 1995 during the New York Young Playwright’s Festival I had the opportunity to see a new Ives production at this theatre. The space was an intimate black box with a deep stage. The show was some of the best theatre I’ve ever seen in my life. It convinced me that a strong relationship between a theatre company and a playwright could lead to better artwork.
