Hugh Hefner penned the "Playboy philosophy" in the early sixties. It was a regular feature in Playboy for several years and was meant to discourage critics of his magazine. The column took various forms ranging from verbose diatribes to transcripts of round table discussions with members of the clergy.

To summarize Hef's point of view, the philosophy demanded it's followers:

• Reject the puritanical history of America.


• Be a hedonist and enjoy all of the things a cosmopolitan life has to offer.


• Be wild and interesting and freethinking, but never under any circumstances close-minded, sexist or racist.
