In Greek mythology, a brother and sister, children of Athamas and Nephele (Greek: "cloud"). During a famine, their stepmother Ino wanted to sacrifice them, but Nefele gave them a golden, flying ram (from whose skin the Golden Fleece was later made) to flee on.

During the flight of the children to Colchis, Helle fell off the ram's back into the sea, and drowned. In her honour, the strait around the Dardanelles was named the Hellespont (Greek: Hellespontos, "Helle's sea").
