I hate driving through Pennsylvania. I don't hate the state itself, or the people, just driving through it. It's not a problem with the scenery. In fact, the Pennsylvania scenery is about 6 million times better than the flat, jejune, cornfields and farms that is Ohio. Pennsylvania has trees, and mountains and even more fun, tunnels under the mountains. The roads aren't in the greatest shape, but that's not really my complaint. The thing I hate about driving through Pennsylvania is the cops.

The highways in Pennsylvania are designed specifically to make it easier for the cops to prey on unsuspecting motorists. The cops sit around bends, behind bridges, and there are even special cutouts in ravines so they can hide under the road surface and then pop up as you drive by. I've gotten more speeding tickets the few times I've driven through Pennsylvania that I have in all my times driving in my home state, Ohio.

But enough of my ramblings and back to the topic at hand. What I propose is simple. A large bridge over Pennsylvania that allows you to just bypass the state entirely. Want to go from Maryland to New York? Just hop on the bypass and be spared the pain and anguish of driving through Pennsylvania. There'd also be an east-west connector between Ohio and New York.

It'd be like a giant turnpike except the only exits would be at the ends, never in Pennsylvania. The road would travel high in the sky, so don't drive over the edge. That'd be a rather nasty fall. Of course there'll be plenty of rest areas, truck stops, and Stuckey's on the way to take care of your every need. And there'd be no toll to ride the great bypass. Unless you're from Pennsylvania. Then it's $20.
