In April of 1912 Patrick Dooley left his home in Patrickswell, Ireland in order to make his way to New York City. In Queenstown, he found passage on a ship called the RMS Titanic.

The Titanic left Queenstown (its third and final stop before heading to New York) on April 11th, 1912. Patrick held ticket #370376, which cost him £7 15s (about $12 at the time and about $620 in today's currency). The ticket, however, did not get him to America. Patrick died in the tragic sinking of the Titanic April 14-15th 1912.

But his memory lives on. The day he left, Patrick sent a postcard to his sweetheart, Mary, to tell her he was boarding the Titanic. The story of Patrick and Mary is remembered today in a musical appropriately titled "The Postcard", by David Christy. The first performance of the musical was at The Green Room Theatre, Manchester, England on April, 12th 1992.

The postcard itself was auctioned in 1990 for £3,600 (about $5,420). It was also featured in an exhibit called "Titanic: Fortune and Fate", at The Mariners' Museum in Newport, VA (January 24 through November 1, 1998).
