OCRWM (pronounced AWK-rum) is a unit of the United States Department of Energy that is principally responsible for accepting, transporting, and disposing of (storing) high-level radioactive waste. The waste material it handles comes from a variety of sources, primarily US nuclear power facilities but also from research, medical equipment, foreign sources (US-backed nuclear research), and even "national defense activities" (whatever that means).
The highest-profile project for which the office is responsible is the in-progress nuclear waste disposal site at Yucca Mountain, Nevada -- approximately 100 miles outside of Las Vegas, touching Nellis AFB.
In the 1982 Nuclear Waste Policy Act (NWPA, pronounced NOO-pah), the DOE established guidelines and regulations for handling and disposal of nuclear waste. Chief among the specifications was the creation of OCRWM, which directly reports to the Secretary of Energy. Since then, it has investigated and developed plans for a national nuclear waste disposal facility, with proposed sites in several states.
