Nick Cave and the
Bad Seeds are an ever-changing group of musicians formed in
1984 after the breakup of Nick Cave's band,
The Birthday Party, in
Berlin. The name "
Bad Seeds" may
come either from the
Bible (e.g.
Matthew 13) or from the film
Bad Seed
by
Mervin LeRoy,
1956, based on a
play by
Maxwell Anderson and a novel by
William March.
People either tend to leave this band alone entirely or become
rabid fans. On first listen (and sometimes on every listen) their work may appear quite morbid, as Nick Cave has a
fascination with
death. However, he also has a
fascination with
redemption and the
Bible. Between a
voice so low it sends
shivers up one's
spine, driving rhythms, lyrics that hover between
storytelling and
obsession, and a
versatile group of
excellent musicians from various countries, Nick Cave
transports his listeners to a new and strange land somewhere between the
underbelly of life, a
carnival, and a
death bed replete with
angels watching over the
saved.
