I've been at my mother's house a week and ran out of socks. At the grocery store we purchased new socks that say "no nonsense" across the toes, so I must remove them to be silly. The label claimed "the socks breathe". Sometimes I take words too literally.

My mother also bought me a purple frying pan that is not Teflon but white ceramic-lined. It was in the soup aisle.

To say that I love the socks and the pan might cheapen the word, but I do love them, so I picked daffodils with the help of the streetlight, after midnight because it is really being with my mother I love.

As she lay sleeping, I felt like an odd thief filling the kitchen table with vases of so much more than yellow. For her.
