One of the
monologues written and performed by
Spalding Gray. The film
was released in
1992 starring Gray and directed by
Nick Broomfield (
Kurt and Courtney).
The story tells of Gray's obsession with writing a book (The Monster of
the story)- that is an autobiographical fiction that never seemed to end. In
the monologue he discusses his feelings regarding his mother and her suicide
- and the fact that he missed her funeral; his fears of AIDS; travels to
revolution in Central America; his escape to Moscow for The Russian Film
Festival, and a it ends with his stint as The Narrator in Thornton Wilder's
"Our Town" (which left me in tears, laughing).
This was, in my opinion, one of his best stories...well worth a look.
His other films of this type are: "
Swimming to Cambodia", and
"
Gray's Anatomy"
