Mayumi Oda is a modern silkscreen artist born in 1941 in Tokyo, Japan . She was trained in classical silk-screening at the Tokyo University of Fine Arts. In 1966 Mayumi left Japan with her American husband. In the 1960’s, in New York City Mayumi came into her own by modernizing traditional Japanese images and themes to reflect her growing social and environmental concerns. In the 1990’s her activism lead her to found a non-profit for a plutonium free future.
Mayumi transforms bodhisattvas into voluptuous goddesses and vegetables into whimsical plays on words. Her work is currently in museums throughout America, Europe and Japan. It can also be found in various books such as the children’s book Happy Veggies, Being Peace by Thich Nhat Hanh and Dharma Gaia: A Harvest of Essays on Buddhism and Ecology.
