1913 E.M. Forster novel which remained unpublished until 1971 because of its descriptions of homosexuality. Maurice Hall (Forster would have pronounced it "morris") is born privileged, and this would be a typical novel about upperclass English society in the late 19th century, if Maurice weren't attracted to other men. He attends public school and Cambridge, where he falls in love with Clive, one of his schoolmates. Homosexuality is a criminal offense in late 19th century and early 20th century England, so Maurice's feelings cause him a considerable level of angst.

Subject of a 1987 film, starring Hugh Grant as Clive and directed by James Ivory.
