It's nice to know what's happening in a place you plan to visit before you go there. Unfortunatly, that's not always easy to do. The really interesting publications are usually only available in the town in question. While visiting Toronto recently I picked up a few such publications:
Once you have local publications, Expecially the alternative weekly type, it's a lot easier to figure out what things to do and see in the city of your destination. The weekly rags tend to cover local culture better than the Dailies IMHO.
But for the really interesting stuff you need to rely on word of mouth or zines.
