The inevitable gentrification of the Upper West Side of Manhattan was largely due to the decision to build Lincoln Center there in the 1960's.

In fact, the movie from the musical West Side Story, featuring gang warfare, was filmed on the site of Lincoln Center, right before they broke ground.
