Dr Laurence Godfrey, Physicist, recently hit the headlines when he sued Demon Internet after they refused to remove two defamatory items from a newsgroup. Dr. Godfrey had asked several other ISPs to remove the postings but only Demon Internet refused. Demon Internet settled out of court (interestingly, it decided on this course of action after it had been taken over by Thus). This 'Landmark Internet libel case settlement' sets a disturbing precedent for other British ISPs and for free speech in general. Demon agreed to pay damages and legal costs totalling nearly four-hundred-thousand dollars.
