1922-1999. First president of Tanzania, 1964-1985. A real statesman, as opposed to the many nightmares in neighboring countries: he fairly successfully forged a real nation out of the various tribes and religions of Tanganyika and Zanzibar; he was less successful in his go-fast, inflexible implementation of "African Socialism" - a free-er market reigns now, with his blessing. He may have been the one to coin the unfortunate term "one-party democracy", used by lesser men as a License to Reign.
