1942- The most important jazz violinist of the past two decades
A classically trained musician, Ponty has, like many players of his generation, traversed several different paths and musical genres in his career. He usually plays an electric violin and incorporates effects like echo, delay, and distortion to create sounds not normally associated with the instrument. He worked with Frank Zappa from 1968-75 also played with Mahavishnu Orchestra on their album Visions of the Emerald Beyond.
