Born July 21, 1939
New Albany, IN. Jamey is best known for publishing an impressive collection of
jazz education materials, most notably his "play-a-long" albums, which provide the
rhythm section tracks for popular jazz standards, a kind of
karaoke for jazz musicians. Aebersold has recorded over ninety play-a-long albums, which offer musicians the chance to practice their
improvisation skills in private.
Aebersold graduated from
Indiana University with a
masters degree in the
saxophone in 1959, and received an honorary
doctorate in music in 1992. He also plays
piano and
bass, and teaches jazz improvisation clinics every summer, in addition to the improvisation classes at the
University of Louisville.
