Huan is 'Mighty Hound' in Sindarin. He was the Hound of Valinor, the greatest dog in J.R.R. Tolkien's world. He was originally the hound of Oromë. Oromë gave him to Celegorm of the Noldor and when is he was exiled to Middle-Earth, Huan came with him. After several hundred years, Celegorm turned to evil ways and Huan followed Beren and Luthien and helped them capture a Silmaril. He slew both the Werewolf Lord Draugluin, and Carcharoth, the greatest wolf of all. It was in this latter, much prophesied, battle, that Huan was mortally wounded. Because of his power and age, many believe he was a Maiar.
