He was safe where I had left him. No one else's problems were my own. Outside was smelling like October. Leaves everywhere, crunchable into wonderful brown dust. Everything became smaller pieces. The easier to fit together. I had left something terrible – left it, forgotten it, and found all the things it had been blocking. Christmas. New toys. My whole body was a new playground and time was all mine. All mine.
