September 12, 1940. A series of explosions rocked the Hercules Powder Company plant beginning at 1:30pm. More than a dozen buildings of the large factory were destroyed in the two major blasts and some later minor explosions. 55 people died. The blasts were heard as far as 40 miles away.

(this is one of the New Jersey disasters)
