The capital of Zimbabwe, population about 600 000, or two million including surrounding shanty towns. It was formerly called Salisbury, a name adopted in about 1890 when the British began to colonize the area they dubbed Rhodesia, but Harare was always the native Shona name for it, restored on independence in 1980. It comes from a local ruler of the area, and is said to mean "he who does not sleep".
