Hacks on the Green Building

MIT's Green Building is the tallest building in Cambridge, and contains on its roof a large variety of scientific equipment belonging primarily to the Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Science department. Between the large expanse of windows and the highly distinctive ray dome, the Green Building has been a prime target for hacks--although with the $500 fine for being caught on the roof, it can also be a risky proposition.

Hacks on the Green Building include:

• Greenspeak, a variety of hack which uses lit windows to create designs
  
• A giant smiley face on the spherical ray dome
  
• A Magic Pi Ball, with the message "Outlook Hazy", also on the ray dome
  
• A giant Statue of Liberty. The year was 1976, and the Boston Pops had gone to New York City for the bicentennial instead of performing their traditional Fourth of July concert on the Esplanade. The hackers decided that in trade, they would take something just as valuable from New York. The ray dome was given a giant green crown, and the light became a large torch, transforming the entire building into a giant Lady Liberty.
  
• The side of the building has been used by certain floors of the adjacent East Campus dormitory as an enormous projection screen. During Rush of 2000, a three-story-high Fifth East hall mascot (a giant red frowning face) was visible on the building from well into Boston.
