The British (and indeed most of the British Empire/Commonwealth) label the floors of a building as integers.

Ground level is zero
The floor immediately above ground level is one
The floor immediately below ground level is minus one/sub one

...and before you ask: yes there is a direct isomorphism here to array numbering.
