During the Vietnam War civilians were drafted and had to complete a full year in the military. Because of the short tour of duty, soldiers were always leaving soon after they had finaly gotten to be good soldiers. At the same time, new soldiers were always coming in who didn't have any experience and were bound to make mistakes. They were refered to as FNGs, which stands for "fucking new guy".
