Ex astris, scientia is the motto of Starfleet Academy in the fictional Star Trek universe. It is a Latin phrase meaning "from the stars, knowledge."
This motto first appeared in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The First Duty" (Season 5, Episode 19, first aired March 30, 1992). The motto was based on the motto of the Apollo 13 NASA mission, ex luna, scientia, meaning "from the Moon, knowledge," which in turn was based on the motto of the U.S. Navy, ex scientia, tridens, meaning "from knowledge, sea power."
