Eoghan Ó Tuairisc (1919-1982), originally Eugene Watters, was a noted Irish writer and artist. He wrote both in Irish and English, and his most important works are the Irish-language novels L'Attaque and Dé Luain. Both are historical novels. In the first one, Ó Tuairisc describes the French landing in Killala, Mayo in 1798, while the second one is a novel about the Easter Rising written in a stream of consciousness kind of style. Ó Tuairisc was born in Ballinasloe, and while his Irish was rich and varied, he was not a native speaker, and the fluent speaker of the language can sometimes spot the typical error of a non-native. Despite this, Ó Tuairisc ranks among the greatest writers in the language.
