A master drummer (1930-1992) from the diasporic focal point of New Orleans, and most famous for his work with Ornette Coleman. The geography sometimes showed (huh? can't we just call it "a tasty gumbo" and be done with it?) in his playing - while OC's other drummer at the time (i.e. the early 60's), Billy Higgins, put the "jazz" in free jazz, Ed's playing had a faint whiff of NO's indigenous funk, and the melodicism of pan drums.
