Ahhh the college years. You all may think that it's all fun and happy times(i doubt many think that). Think again. I know a guy who only eats rice to get by. This guy is my brother, and it pains me to know that he is struggling economically. (It also embarasses me...cook something you bum.) Rice isn't that bad, but I suppose that after a couple of months of only that as my diet, I would get pretty tired of it. So brother, RAMEN. Go get yourself some...

See beriberi for the full cultural mambo about Thiamine deficiency.

The Vitaminless, Zinc- and Iron-less travails of a polished white rice diet are stock test questions for medical students, nutritionists, and Peace Corps types. Keeping the germ on the rice/wheat is much better but still not a complete source of nutrition any more than an all-ramen diet.

After I read this node, I realized that Matt and I are actually quite close to this. We probably have rice four or five times a week, and the rest of the time we either don't cook or we go to our parents' (mmm... home-cooking).

One cheap way to help out rice alone is veggie stir-fry. Once you have a bottle of canola oil and some stir-fry sauce, they last for awhile. Then you just buy cheap veggies at the store with change you find in the couch. I once bought enough veggies for two people for 68¢. (Actually, I really embarassed myself - I didn't have the 68¢ in my wallet and I had to use my Interac card.) I think it was a carrot, a stick of celery, and a head of broccoli. Just use half of each for two people for a meal. Should keep you slightly more healthy than rice alone.
