As a Combat Support Agency of the Department of Defense, the DIA's mission is to provide timely, objective and cogent military intelligence to the warfighters--soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines--and to the decisionmakers and policymakers of the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Government.

The Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) was established in 1961, and is designed to "provide all-source intelligence to the US armed forces" and emphasizes:

  • Targeting and battle damage assessment
  • Weapons proliferation
  • Warning of impending crises
  • Support to peacekeeping operations
  • Maintenance of databases on foreign military organizations and their equipment
  • Support United Nations operations and US allies.

    The DIA is primarily housed in the Defense Intelligence Analysis Center on Bolling Air Force Base, and also in the Armed Forces Medical Intelligence Center in Maryland.
