The cork tree (Quercus suber) grows in a limited area of the world because of its need for an unusual combination of high humidity, low rainfall and high sunlight. Most cork trees grow in Portugal, and other wine-producing regions around the mediterranean sea.

The bark of the cork tree evolved to protect the tree from the effects of drought and other environmental difficulties. Nowadays it is used mostly for wine corks and the forests are considered national treasures.
