A chord sequence from tunes on John Coltrane's Giant Steps. based on exercises from his voluminous notebooks; the idea was to add more chromaticism to the basic jazz cadence. In place of:

D minor | G7 | C | C

in the key of C major, chords were inserted, so it was:

D minor Eb7 | Ab B7 | E G7 | C

At first, it really sounded like exercises, enlivened by the virtuoso speed at which it was played. In subsequent years, Trane would freely warp and superimpose it over other chords in his improvisations, no longer writing tunes with the explicit sequence in it.
