Microsoft Excel 2000
The
egg:
A
race car game called Dev
Hunter
How to
crack it:
1. Open a new
file in
Excel 2000.
2.
Select File and
Save As, and in the Save As
Type menu, select
Web
Page.
3. Click the
Selection:
Sheet radio button, and
checkmark Add
Interactivity.
4. Click
Publish. In the Publish As
dialog box, click Publish again.
5.
Switch over to
Internet Explorer (
IE). Open the
HTML page you've
just saved in Excel. You'll see an Excel
worksheet in the middle of
the IE page.
6. Press the
Page Down key until you get to
row 2000, then
tab over
to
column WC.
7. Hold down
Shift-
Ctrl-
Alt while you click the
Office logo at the
upper left.
8. Now, you're dropped into a
full-screen game similar to
Spy
Hunter, called Dev Hunter. Use the
arrow keys to
drive. You'll see
developers' names painted on the
road as you go.
9. If you're an
aggressive driver, hit the
spacebar to
fire and the
letter O to
drop oil slicks. When it gets
dark, use H to turn on
your
headlights. (Note: Your
system must be equipped with
DirectX in
order for this
egg to
work.)
Microsoft Excel 97
The egg:
A flight simulation game
How to crack it:
1. Open a new worksheet and press F5.
2. Type X97:L97 and press Enter.
3. Press Tab.
4. Hold down Ctrl-Shift while you click the toolbar's Chart Wizard
button (the one with the three 3D shapes).
5. A 3D flight simulator will appear. The mouse controls flight; the
right button moves you forward; the left button puts you in reverse.
(Note: Your system must be equipped with DirectX in order for this
egg to work.)
Microsoft Excel 95
The egg:
A Doom-like exploration game called the Hall of Tortured Souls
How to crack it:
1. Open a blank worksheet.
2. Select row 95.
3. Press Tab once to move to column B.
4. Select Help/About Microsoft Excel from the main menu.
5. Hold down Ctrl-Alt-Shift while you click the Tech Support button.
6. A window called Hall of Tortured Souls appears. Use the cursor
keys to move around.
7. To go on a quest for pictures of the Excel developers, turn your
virtual self around 180 degrees and go down the stairs. Type
excelkfa, and the wall disappears, revealing a narrow walkway that
leads to a quest.
(Note: Your system must be equipped with DirectX
in order for this egg to work.)
Qualcomm Eudora Pro (3.x to 4.2)
The egg:
The skinny on Eudora's interdepartmental joking
How to crack it:
1. Select Help/About Eudora
2. Click the Credits or More Credits button (depending on your
version).
3. The credits will roll by, but this isn't the good part. Press
Ctrl for the nicknames and interdepartmental ribbing (for instance,
the heading "Marketing" becomes "Marketing Weenies" and "Sales"
becomes "No problem, that can be added to the product").
Microsoft Word 97
The egg:
A pared-down pinball game
How to crack it:
1. In a new document, type Blue.
2. Double-click the word to select it, and select Format and Font.
3. Change the font style to bold, and the text color to blue. Click
OK.
4. Type a space after the bold, blue word Blue.
5. Select Help/About Microsoft Word.
6. Hold down Ctrl-Shift and click the banner containing the Word
logo.
7. The whole screen will be taken over by a black screen with a cast
list and a pinball game. Use Z to work the left flipper and M for
the right flipper. If your boss comes to look over your shoulder,
hit the Esc key to exit the game.
Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0
The egg:
A look at the twisted creators of IE 5.0, plus an animated treat
How to crack it:
1. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
2. Under the General tab, click the Languages button.
3. Click Add and in the User Defined box, type ie-ee.
4. Click OK, and in the dialog box, select User Defined
ie-ee.
5. Click the Move Up button until User Defined
ie-ee is at the
top. Click OK.
6. In IE, click the Search icon.
7. In the new sidebar that pops up, click the Previous Searches
button for a look at the Internet Explorer team, or hit the
Customize button above to see a little Netscape-IE rivalry in
action.
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0
The egg:
A cast list with some humorous entries
How to crack it:
1. Select Help/About Internet Explorer.
2. Hold down Ctrl and drag the E logo from the top right over to the
world icon.
3. Still holding down Ctrl, drag the E over the banner text that
reads "Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0."
4. When the banner text slides to the right, an Unlock button
appears. Click it.
5. The world will shake. Hold down Ctrl again, drag the E onto the
world, and release it.
6. Watch the mostly boring name list for its few funny entries.
Netscape Navigator and Communicator
The egg:
Text from the Book of Mozilla, a fictional book of the Bible
How to crack it:
1. In the Location box, type about:mozilla.
2. Read the mock quotation from the Book of Mozilla. (Mozilla is the
open-source browser project that designed the Netscape 6 browser.
Its mascot is a Godzilla-like lizard.)
AltaVista and Ask Jeeves
The egg:
Interactive dialogue from famous screenplays
How to crack it:
1. Go to either Ask Jeeves or AltaVista.
2. Enter Who's on first? and click Search.
3. The first response will be a repetition of the question. Click
the icon next to it, and you'll get the next line from the Abbot and
Costello routine.
4. Click again, and you'll get a relevant site.
5. Experiment with these other lines from famous scripts: What is
the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow? or To be or not to be?
America Online 5.0
The egg:
An animated Web surfer with snorkel
How to crack it:
1. In the keyword box, type aol://1391:43-52114.
2. A small box will pop up, complete with a cute snorkeler who waves
and ducks under water until you close his window.
