Chad Gadya, or "One Kid" is an Aramaic song which concludes the Jewish Passover seder. The lyric can be read as an allegory for God's providence: the kid (i.e. baby goat) represents the Jews, the two coins which buy the kid are Moses and Aaron, the cat is Assyria, the dog is Babylonia, the stick is Persia, the water is Greece, the ox is Rome, the slaughterer is the Ottoman Empire, the angel of death is Medieval Europe. Or the song, with its repetative, nursury rhyme structure, is simply present at the end of the very long seder to keep children awake that long, though it is a pretty macabre way of doing so. "Chad Gadya" was first included in the Passover Haggadah in the Prague edition of 1509, making it a very late addition. What follows is the traditional text, first in Aramaic and then in English.

One kid, one kid
That my father bought for two coins
One kid, one kid!

Then came a cat
And ate the kid
That my father bought for two coins
One kid, one kid!

Then came a dog
And bit the cat
That ate the kid
That my father bought for two coins
One kid, one kid!

Then came a stick
And beat the dog
That bit the cat
That ate the kid
That my father bought for two coins
One kid, one kid!

Then came a fire
And burned the stick
That beat the dog
That bit the cat
That ate the kid
That my father bought for two coins
One kid, one kid!

Then came water
And quenched the fire
That burned the stick
That beat the dog
That bit the cat
That ate the kid
That my father bought for two coins
One kid, one kid!

Then came an ox
And drank the water
That quenched the fire
That burned the stick
That beat the dog
That bit the cat
That ate the kid
That my father bought for two coins
One kid, one kid!

Then came a slaughterer
And killed the ox
That drank the water
That quenched the fire
That burned the stick
That beat the dog
That bit the cat
That ate the kid
That my father bought for two coins
One kid, one kid!

Then came the angel of death
And killed the slaughterer
That killed the ox
That drank the water
That quenched the fire
That burned the stick
That beat the dog
That bit the cat
That ate the kid
That my father bought for two coins
One kid, one kid!

Then came the Holy One, Blessed be He
And killed the angel of death
That killed the slaughterer
That killed the ox
That drank the water
That quenched the fire
That burned the stick
That beat the dog
That bit the cat
That ate the kid
That my father bought for two coins
One kid, one kid!
