Sucessor to the California State Department of Public Works, it's the California Department of Transportation. CalTrans trucks are easily identifiable, they're big and orange. Workers are often seen doing maintenance on the freeways. They seem to get a lot of attacks by the general public (At least in Los Angeles.), although I'm not quite sure why, maybe its because so many problems with the road, and if that's true you have to realize they have to deal with community opposition and have to file EPA papers, etc., just to get a project started! And if they're fixing it people complain of the delays...right. However, I have to say they really need to work on proofreading their signs before putting them up.

Some examples:

• Pasadena: Sign with directions to several freeways... including US 210... wait a minute! There is no US 210! It's Interstate 210.
• San Francisco International Airport: There was once a sign to US 101... except there was just a blank shield.
• San Bernardino: Sign stating California 395... uh, no. CalTrans must mean US 395.
• Indio: Not really a error, but its pretty funny. Sign on Interstate 10 marking Indio and "other Desert Cities." Uh... sure... you know, "other Desert Cities" isn't a control city, right?
• El Monte: Truck Route sign with a Interstate 10 sign, but there's an added a "I-" with the 10 in the shield. Hmm... doesn't the shield mean its an interstate?
• Inyo County: End of SR-14 and its junction with US Highway 395. However, why is the sign saying "North" US 395 using the California green one? (CalTrans seems to enjoy trying to make US 395 into a state route)
• San Pedro: Sign directing motorists to California Highway 11. There is no SR-11 in the state anymore. It is the modern-day Interstate 110 (If you're even more bored, when SR-110 hits downtown, take a look at some of the CalTrans white markers that give the road name, and mile of it... they still say "11.").
