Boniface III who lies buried under
St. Peter's Basilica was Pope from 607 to 608. He reigned for less than a full year.
He was the son of John Cataadioce, an inhabitant of Rome. His most important action prior to becoming pope was as a papal emissary to Constantinople in 603 where he gained much favour.
This was very useful in the dispute that arose after he became pope. There was a dispute as to who the supreme leader of the Christian church was. Perhaps in part due to the contacts that he had made, Boniface was able to reaffirm the superiority of the See of Rome over that of Constantinople.
His other lasting act, was to issue a decree stating that the election of a new pope was not to be discussed until at least three days after the burial of the previous one.
