Like many great soul voices, he sings with one foot in the choir and one in the red light district; Bland's style adds a croonerly base to a genre noted for the shout. A "blues legend", but 1960's Two Steps from the Blues is a classic of rock and roll and soul music as well, and his "I Pity the Fool", et al, has been covered by many rock bands, including David Bowie's second.
