Discussions of cybernetic immortality, brain uploading, mind storage, and the like often seem to involve the visualization of remote mainframes or nebulous distributed systems. A more interesting scenario occurs if one imagines a robin's egg-sized device which nestles inside the skull and periodically scans and updates your mind recording. I would want mine to be made out of some suitably tough material, so that it survives the motorcycle accident, nuclear war, or gray goo event that does me in; hence the name of this node.
Extra credit: if this device updates continuously with undetectable latency, is it conscious? After all, from its perspective (assuming it has one), it is self-aware, your body is responding to its thoughts, etc. There's two of you inside your skull, essentially.
