A cross-eyed character actor in the silent film days. He died in 1940 at around age 70. I'd have never heard of him except for a song on Joe Henry's Shuffletown CD, "Ben Turpin in the Army." It's a great song with these lines:

Ben Turpin's in the Army
With a bugle in his hand
A hero 'cause they followed when he ran

I run and seem like more than what I am.

The weird thing is that I can find no mention of him ever being in the Army. I wonder if this was in some old silent film that Mr. Henry saw?
