Bellevue
Hospital Center, in
Manhattan, is renowned for its
emergency services but also provides ongoing
patient care in a 25-story building. Since 1968, the
New York University School of
Medicine has directed
clinical services for the hospital, providing more than 1,200
attending physicians and more than 500
residents and
interns.
It is the oldest public hospital in the country, having opened in 1736 with six beds. Bellevue had the country's first nursing school and first maternity ward, and today includes six intensive care units, centers for microsurgery, brain injury, spinal cord injury, and pediatric, adolescent behavioral, and psychiatric services. In cooperation with the New York City Board of Education, the hospital operates a school for emotionally disturbed children and teens.
