A river that starts in the Rockies of Colorado and runs through Kansas, bends at Great Bend (a town), joins with the Little Arkansas in Wichita and flows south until it joins with the Mississippi. The Arkansas river however is not pronounced like the state of Arkansas is. The Arkansas River is "The ARE Kansas" river. Quite simply it comes from the Kansa indians.
