The title of the 6 lower Archontes (plural from Archon). The positions were formed because the 3 higher Archontes(the Archon Basileus, the Archon Eponymos and the Archon Polemarchos) couldn't cope with the expanse of their jobs by themselves. Each higher Archon was assigned two Archontes Thesmothetai to aid him in his work. Gradually the Thesmothetai gained independence and were not subject to any specific higher Archon, and their job definitions mixed.
