The genus Architeuthis includes A. Dux, the most commonly recognized giant squid species in the genus.

No giant squid has so far been closely observed or studied alive. All specimen gathered were caught in fishing nets or were washed ashore.

The largest giant squid found measured approximately 60 ft, with sightings claiming lengths of up to 175 ft.
