Anna Freud was born in Vienna in 1895, the youngest of Sigmund Freud and Martha Freud's six children. She was the only member of the family to follow in her father's footsteps and the whole of her working life was devoted to psychoanalysis. As a young woman she became his secretary, companion and pupil and in 1922 she began to practice as a psychoanalyst and became an active member of the International Psychoanalytical Association. By 1925 she had become Secretary of the Vienna Psychoanalytic Training Institute and in the late 1920s her working life was divided between working with children and supervising the training of would-be analysts. She taught the child analysis seminar and an applied analysis course in Psychoanalytic Pedagogy which was also attended by Viennese schoolteachers and social workers.

By the mid 1930s Anna combined the roles of secretary, nurse and aide to her father who was by then in his early 80s and in failing health. She was also regarded by many as the obvious successor as the leader of the psychoanalytic movement on the strength of her writing and her clinical practice. She remained broadly faithful to her father's ideas, however she became more interested in the dynamics of the psyche than in its structure. Specifically, she developed Sigmund Freud's notion of the ego, in particular the part it plays in the defence mechanisms. A significant point in her thinking on this subject was the publication of The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defence in 1937. The 'ego psychology' movement which grew out of this work was significant in that it encouraged the applications of Freudian theory beyond psychopathology and into the territories of developmental and social psychology.

Anna Freud died in 1982.

Anna Freud 1895-1982

"I don't think I'd be a good subject for a biography, not enough 'action'! You would say all there is to say in a few sentences - she spent her life with children!"

Anna Freud's life was a constant search for useful social applications of psychoanalysis, above all in treating, and learning from children. She originated the child development profile, which is still used today in child therapy. She was also noted for her work with children who survived the Holocaust. She received many awards, starting with an honorary doctorate from Clark University in 1950, to a doctorate from Harvard in 1980. Queen Elizabeth II awarded her the C.B.E. in 1972. She founded the Hampstead Child Therapy Center in London in 1947, which later was renamed the Anna Freud Center. Her selfless dedication to others marks her as a true hero, 'a few sentences' about her follow.

Childhood

Born on 3rd December, 1895, Anna was the youngest of Sigmund and Martha Freud's six children. After her birth Martha took an extended vacation, and never established a close bond with Anna, who was taken care of by the nanny, Josefine Chihlarz. Growing up, Anna did not fit in with the other five children, and felt closest to her father who was proud of her intellectual interests and her dissatisfaction with 'feminine activities'. When compared to her sister Sophie, the family described them as the "beauty and the brains" and she considered herself "shabby and inconspicuous".

She took an early interest in her fathers work, reading his books and talking at length with him on the subject of psychoanalysis. She was allowed to sit in on the Vienna Psychological Society meetings, and learned much from the many house guests her father entertained. She learned less in school, where she was bored and when she graduated in 1912 was not sure of a direction in life.

Teaching

She decided upon teaching, and in 1914 passed her exams to become an elementary teacher. Between 1914 and 1920 taught in England and Hungary and we are told she possessed a gift for teaching. In 1917 she contracted tuberculosis, which would have long term effects on her health thereafter. During this period she also continued with her study of the emerging field of psychoanalysis, corresponding with her father regularly. In 1920 she returned to Austria and began to volunteer at the Baumgarten Home, which cared for children orphaned by the War. She became a member of the International Psychoanalytic Congress in 1922, and planned to go to Berlin to establish a practice. However her father became ill with cancer and she returned to take care of him.

Looking after her father

Anna began to take care of her father's professional career, defending intellectual challenges and production aspects of publishing. Nursing her father, she also began to formulate her own ideas, focusing on helping children, inspired by her work at the orphanage. Her first book was published in 1927, titled 'Introduction to the Technique of Child Analysis'. At the same time she was expanding upon her own counseling practice and teaching at the Vienna Training Institute. She, with fellow colleagues (most notably Erik Erikson) also organized a school for local children.

Coming out from the shadow of her father

Anna's theoretical viewpoint began to diverge from that of her fathers, she reasoned children's symptoms vary over time, as they pass through developmental stages, in contrast to the adults her father examined. She continued to publish and became the director of the Vienna Psychoanalytical Training Institute. However, political events in Europe began to threaten, and although she kept the charitable school for poor children open as long as possible, when Germany invaded Austria, in March 1938, the Freuds had to flee to England. Anna quickly established a new practice, and began lecturing in English. The war broke out in September 1939, and Sigmund Freud died a few weeks later.

In 1947, Anna and longtime friend and colleague Dorothy Burlingham, established the Hampstead Nursery, which provided foster care for over 80 children. In 1947 they started teaching child therapy and her influence on both British and American therapists was extensive. Until the end of her life in 1982, Anna continued to lecture, traveling regularly to the United States and teaching at Yale Law School. Her 8th volume of her work was published in 1983.

Anne Freud never stopped working, as soon as she was finished with one project she began another. Her goal was to heal the minds of children, it is difficult to imagine a cause greater than that and she truly earned her place in history.
