4Motion is the all wheel drive (AWD) system Volkswagen has in common with Audi's Quattro, from which it differs not at all. It uses torsen differentials to distribute power to the appropriate wheel. It is an efficient (low-loss) system which does not have parts designed to wear out as clutch pack-type limited slip differentials, but when a wheel loses too much load it becomes ineffectual. This tendency is balanced by implementing traction control using ABS, in order to slow the slipping wheel to the point where the torsen differential can be effective.
