This is a display adapter card that is designed to accelerate the rendering of 3D images to the monitor screen. They vary in capabilities and quality, with a lot of the earlier cards claiming that they were 3D accelerators when actually they were more properly called decellerators (Nice pretty pictures but at speeds less than a comparable software renderer) at best or being poor accelerators (as in nothing resembling texture mapped polygons, etc.)
